Researchers and practitioners gathered to tackle the pressing challenges in creating fair, accountable, and transparent AI systems—topics that are more critical than ever as AI shapes crucial aspects of our lives, from healthcare to finance.
I’ve got to say, I wish I could have been there in person. The lineup was stellar, and the energy must have been electric! Guess I’ll have to settle for 2025. As you all know, I’ve often mentioned how the ethics committee should include a diverse group of professionals—from computer scientists to lawyers, and from sociologists to psychologists. There are some truly inspiring papers across different fields. Today, I’m excited to share the Best Paper Award winners with you. But don’t worry if these aren’t the ones that catch your eye—I'll provide a link to all the papers at the end so you can explore more.

What’s the Big Deal About ACM FAccT?
For those new to ACM FAccT, this conference is the ultimate hub for cross-disciplinary discussions on AI and its societal impacts. Scholars from computer science, law, sociology, and other fields come together to tackle the big questions. This year's themes included bias mitigation, transparency, and accountability.

1. Algorithmic Pluralism: A Structural Approach To Equal Opportunity
Authors: Shomik Jain, Vinith Suriyakumar, Kathleen Creel, Ashia Wilson
Why It’s Cool: Algorithmic pluralism is about making sure that no single algorithm can severely limit someone's opportunities. This means having multiple pathways for individuals to achieve success, rather than just one narrow route. This concept is crucial because current systems often create bottlenecks, critical decision points that can unfairly constrain opportunities for many people.
What’s Important:
Bottlenecks: These are the decision points in our lives that determine access to opportunities. In algorithmic systems, these bottlenecks can become very strict and pervasive, affecting a wide range of people and opportunities.
Structural Concerns: Two big issues here are patterned inequality and algorithmic monoculture. Patterned inequality happens when existing social disadvantages are reinforced by algorithms, making it even harder for disadvantaged groups to get ahead. Algorithmic monoculture is when many decision-makers use the same data or models, leading to uniform and often unfair outcomes.
Framework for Change: The paper suggests ways to diversify algorithms and decision-making processes to make them fairer. This means using different models, criteria, and processes to avoid the pitfalls of a one-size-fits-all approach.
My Take: The rigid and often unfair nature of current algorithmic systems frustrates many, and I’m no exception. Joseph Fishkin’s idea of opportunity pluralism argues for a society with many gatekeepers and paths to opportunities. As AI becomes more integrated into our lives, it's vital to apply this idea to algorithmic decision-making. Fishkin suggests that to create a more pluralistic opportunity structure, we need to re-examine and fix the bottlenecks in our systems. This means data scientists, decision-makers, and policymakers must identify where they can reduce these bottlenecks to promote fairer opportunities for everyone. I love how the authors push for a diverse approach in decision-making, which is something we desperately need. The idea of breaking down these severe bottlenecks and creating multiple paths to success is not just smart; it's essential for building a fairer society. Personally, I find this approach incredibly inspiring and long overdue.
2. Auditing Work: Exploring the New York City Algorithmic Bias Audit Regime
Authors: Lara Groves, Jacob Metcalf, Alayna Kennedy, Briana Vecchione, Andrew Strait
Why It’s Cool: New York City's Local Law 144 (LL 144) requires independent bias audits of automated employment decision-making tools (AEDTs). This law is one of the first to try to regulate AI systems in hiring, aiming to ensure fairness and transparency.
What’s Important:
Algorithmic Audits: LL 144 mandates annual audits of AEDTs used by employers to identify and mitigate biases that could unfairly impact job applicants based on race, gender, and other protected characteristics.
Challenges and Gaps: The law has several issues, such as vague definitions of AEDTs, unclear criteria for what makes an auditor independent, and difficulties in accessing necessary data from employers and vendors.
Industry Lobbying: Lobbying efforts have narrowed the definition of AEDTs, allowing many companies to declare their tools exempt from the law, leading to inconsistent application and enforcement.
Auditor Roles: There is no clear consensus on what constitutes a legitimate auditor. The study identifies four types of auditor roles, each with different functions and services, highlighting the need for clearer standards and definitions.
My Take: Implementing algorithmic bias audits comes with many practical challenges. While LL 144 is a step in the right direction, its current form has significant flaws that limit its effectiveness. The vague definitions and lack of enforcement mechanisms mean that many biased systems may still operate unchecked. From the conclusion, the authors suggest that clearer definitions and more robust accountability measures are needed. Policymakers should address these gaps to create a more effective auditing regime that truly protects job seekers from discriminatory practices. The paper also emphasizes the need for better guidelines for auditors to ensure they can effectively evaluate and report on AEDTs. The insights provided here are essential for anyone involved in AI policy and ethics, offering a clear path for creating more effective and fair algorithmic auditing systems.
3. Learning about Responsible AI On-The-Job: Learning Pathways, Orientations, and Aspirations
Authors: Michael A. Madaio, Shivani Kapania, Ding Wang, Andrew Zaldivar, Rida Qadri, Remi Denton, Lauren Wilcox
Why It’s Cool: This paper explains how AI practitioners learn about responsible AI (RAI) while on the job. It explores the different ways they acquire knowledge, the challenges they face, and their aspirations for better learning resources. The study is based on interviews with AI practitioners and RAI educators from various organizations.
What’s Important:
Learning Pathways: AI practitioners learn about RAI through self-directed learning (like searching for resources online), interpersonal learning (discussions with colleagues), and applying previous knowledge from other fields. Many are proactive in seeking out resources within their companies or from external sources such as online courses, books, and social media.
Challenges and Gaps: There are significant challenges in finding reliable and authoritative resources. Organizational pressures and demands often limit the effectiveness of learning, with constraints on time and resources leading to less comprehensive training.
RAI Orientations: The paper identifies two main orientations towards RAI learning—computational and procedural. The computational approach focuses on technical solutions and metrics, while the procedural approach involves learning corporate processes and using RAI toolkits.
Aspirations: Practitioners and educators want more sociotechnical approaches to RAI, integrating social, cultural, and ethical considerations into technical training. They seek learning resources that emphasize critical thinking, community engagement, and understanding the broader impacts of AI systems.
My Take: It’s eye-opening to see how AI practitioners often have to learn about responsible AI on their own, which can be both a strength and a weakness. On one hand, it shows their initiative and dedication. On the other hand, it reveals a gap in structured, comprehensive resources. The emphasis on sociotechnical learning—understanding the technical aspects of AI along with its social and ethical implications—really resonates with me. The challenges mentioned, like vague definitions and lack of reliable resources, are frustratingly familiar. The idea of integrating more real-world examples and making training more relevant to different contexts is something I strongly support. This paper offers valuable insights and practical recommendations, making it a must-read for anyone involved in AI development and policy.
4. Real Risks of Fake Data: Synthetic Data, Diversity-Washing, and Consent Circumvention
Authors: Cedric Deslandes Whitney, Justin Norman
Why It’s Cool: This paper explores the use of synthetic data in machine learning, particularly focusing on facial recognition technology (FRT). It highlights two main risks: false confidence in dataset diversity and representation, and the circumvention of consent for data usage. These insights are critical for understanding the ethical implications of using synthetic data.
What’s Important:
Diversity-Washing: Synthetic data can create a false sense of diversity in datasets. While it might appear that synthetic data enhances dataset diversity, it often masks underlying biases and fails to truly address representation issues. This can lead to the continued propagation of biased models.
Consent Circumvention: Using synthetic data can sidestep the need for proper consent, which is a fundamental aspect of data privacy regulations. This circumvention can undermine efforts to ensure that individuals have control over their data and how it is used.
Ethical and Logistical Challenges: The use of synthetic data complicates existing governance and ethical practices. It can consolidate power in the hands of model creators, decoupling data from those it impacts and potentially exacerbating harms from algorithmically-mediated decisions.
My Take: Honestly, this paper made me pause and think about the bigger picture of using synthetic data. It’s easy to see synthetic data as a magic bullet for the hassles of real data collection, but this study shows that the reality is much more complicated. The term "diversity-washing" is particularly striking—it’s like putting a band-aid on a wound that needs stitches. Just because a dataset looks diverse doesn’t mean it actually helps reduce bias in any meaningful way.
Another thing that hit home was the issue of consent. We often overlook the importance of obtaining proper consent, especially in the rush to gather data quickly. This paper highlights how synthetic data can be a loophole, allowing companies to bypass these crucial ethical considerations. It’s a wake-up call that we need more stringent checks and balances.
The authors do a great job of explaining how these risks are not just theoretical but very real, using concrete examples from facial recognition technology. It’s a reminder that the solutions we implement need to be as robust as the problems we’re trying to solve. This paper pushes for a more thoughtful and responsible approach to AI development, and I couldn’t agree more.
5. Akal Badi ya Bias: An Exploratory Study of Gender Bias in Hindi Language Technology
Authors: Rishav Hada, Safiya Husain, Varun Gumma, Harshita Diddee, Aditya Yadavalli, Agrima Seth, Nidhi Kulkarni, Ujwal Gadiraju, Aditya Vashistha, Vivek Seshadri, Kalika Bali
Why It’s Cool: Focuses on identifying and addressing gender bias in Hindi language technology. It explores the unique challenges posed by Hindi, a language spoken by a large population but often overlooked in bias studies which predominantly focus on English.
What’s Important:
Context-Specific Approaches: The study emphasizes the importance of understanding gender bias within the specific cultural and linguistic context of Hindi. Techniques effective for English may not work well for Hindi, highlighting the need for tailored solutions.
Community-Centric Research: By involving rural and low-income women from India, the paper incorporates perspectives often neglected in tech development, promoting a more inclusive approach.
Challenges in Data Mining: The authors point out significant difficulties in mining gender-biased data from Hindi sources, such as high false positive rates and poor model performance using existing methods developed for English.
Field Studies: The research includes field studies to gather diverse perceptions of gender bias, showing the variability in how gender bias is understood and experienced in different contexts.
My Take: Highlighting gender bias in Hindi language technology brings to light a critical issue that’s often overshadowed by the focus on English. The community-centric approach taken by the authors ensures that the research is inclusive and reflective of the real-world impacts of AI technologies on diverse populations. The practical challenges they faced in data mining and the need for context-specific solutions are particularly important takeaways. Moreover, this research raises awareness about the potential for increased biases in technologies that utilize different linguistic and cultural contexts. Even in English, where data is abundant and oversight is more feasible, gender biases are prevalent. This underscores the importance of developing localized large language models (LLMs) for different languages and cultures to better identify and mitigate diverse biases. Supporting the creation of these models can enhance our understanding of biases and promote diversity and inclusion in AI technologies globally.
6. Recommend Me? Designing Fairness Metrics with Providers

Why It’s Cool: Designing fairness metrics for recommender systems by involving the people who are directly impacted—content creators and dating app users. It's all about understanding their real-world experiences and using that to develop fairness metrics that really matter.
What’s Important:
Listening to Users: The researchers engaged with content creators and dating app users to get their take on how recommendation algorithms treat them. This hands-on approach ensures that the fairness metrics are relevant and grounded in reality.
Real Experiences of Unfairness: Participants reported feeling either under-exposed or over-exposed by the algorithms without clear reasons why. This lack of transparency and balance can lead to frustration and a sense of unfair treatment.
Key Fairness Goals: They identified crucial fairness goals like exposure equality and transparency. For content creators, this means having their work seen by an appropriate audience. For dating app users, it means having their profiles shown to compatible matches based on their preferences.
Challenges in Design: Creating fairness metrics isn’t easy. The paper discusses the difficulty in balancing different needs, like ensuring fair exposure without reinforcing biases or compromising user preferences.
My Take: Talking directly to those affected by recommendation systems highlighted issues that might not be obvious from a purely technical perspective. This user-centered approach is something we need more of in tech development. One thing that struck me is the diversity of needs among different user groups. Content creators are looking for fair visibility, while dating app users want accurate and relevant matches. This shows that fairness isn't a one-size-fits-all issue; it needs to be tailored to the specific context and needs of different user groups. The discussion on the challenges of balancing fairness goals is very practical. For example, trying to increase exposure for under-represented groups without creating filter bubbles is a complex task. It’s a reminder that achieving fairness in algorithms is an ongoing process that requires continuous adjustment and user feedback. Involving users in the design of fairness metrics also brings to light the importance of transparency. Users want to understand how algorithms work and why certain decisions are made. This transparency can build trust and make users feel more respected and valued. Overall, this paper underscores the importance of a collaborative approach to designing fairness in recommender systems. It’s about more than just metrics—it’s about making sure these systems work well for everyone involved.
